Oily skin

Oily skin develops when the sebaceous glands produce an excess of sebum - the natural, protective oil that helps keep the skin hydrated. While sebum is essential, too much of it can lead to blocked pores and breakouts.

Common signs of oily skin include:

  • a noticeably shiny or greasy appearance
  • enlarged or highly visible pores
  • congestion, blackheads, and buildup in the pores
  • occasional or frequent acne flare-ups

Because excess oil can also affect how makeup sits on the skin, it’s best to choose products specifically formulated for oily skin types.

Several factors can influence oil production. For some people, it’s largely genetic. For others, it may be triggered by hormonal changes, certain medications, underlying health conditions, or even dietary habits.

Having oily skin doesn’t mean anything is wrong - in fact, it comes with its own advantages.

Natural oils help protect and preserve the skin, and those with oily skin often enjoy a thicker skin barrier and fewer visible wrinkles. The key is finding the right balance between managing excess oil and supporting your skin’s natural hydration.

Here are some helpful guidelines for managing oily skin:

DO wash your face twice a day - in the morning, at night - and after exercising.
DO look for products labelled oil-free and noncomedogenic.
DO use a mild, foaming cleanser.

DO moisturise your skin every day.
DO apply sunscreen whenever you’re outdoors.
DO choose makeup that is water-based and oil-free.

DON’T go to bed without removing your makeup.

DON’T use cleansers that contain oils or alcohol.
DON’T touch your face repeatedly during the day.

It’s also worth noting that oily skin is especially common among individuals with melanin-rich skin, which may increase the likelihood of developing post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) and keloid scarring.

When breakouts occur on oily, deeper skin tones, it’s essential to resist picking or squeezing, as this can lead to dark marks. Instead, focus on gentle, non-drying skincare products that help control excess oil while minimising irritation.
